About The Blanket Lady

The Blanket Lady story began in 1978, rooted in love, resilience, and a desire to create something meaningful. Barbara MacKellar, the heart and hands behind The Blanket Lady, started knitting heirloom-quality baby blankets as a soothing outlet while her eldest son spent countless hours in the hospital undergoing treatment for a congenital heart condition.

What began as a heartfelt hobby soon blossomed into something much larger. As Barbara’s son grew healthy and strong, so did her passion for knitting. She began creating blankets for friends and family, each design personalized for the newest additions to their families. Word quickly spread, and soon friends of friends were requesting these cherished keepsakes. Eventually, even strangers began calling her home, asking for "The Blanket Lady" by name—and just like that, a small business was born.

By the late 1990s, demand had grown so much that Barbara moved her knitting machines out of her basement and into her family’s manufacturing facility. To this day, Barbara works alongside her husband and son, crafting blankets with the same dedication and care that started it all.

Now, over 42 years later, The Blanket Lady has become a beloved tradition for families across generations. Babies who once cuddled in her blankets have grown up to order blankets for their own children. Each custom blanket is still hand-finished, with the same love and pride Barbara poured into the very first one.

At The Blanket Lady, we believe that a personalized blanket is more than a gift—it’s a lifelong treasure, crafted with care, for moments that matter most.
